Participate in creating a scaffolding of
URBAN RE-IMAGINATION

BraddockActiveArts is initiating a community dialogue: abandonment as a beginning, empty lots as community spaces, decay as possibility.

We'd like you to join the exchange by creating a sign that communicates URBAN RE-IMAGINATION. How can abandoned spaces be reclaimed? What can happen in the empty lot? Or in a closed factory? On our common street corners? Where do people go when there are no jobs? What confronts fear and apathy? If the landscape of a city is not valued do the people who live there feel valued?

The sign can be text or image based, and should clearly communicate from a distance of at least 15 feet. As each sign is delivered it will be attached to the scaffolding of the United Brethren Church in Braddock, PA. Gradually, the signs will construct a new language of possibilities. After the introduction of artist signs, community members will be engaged in the creation of their own signs. Together, we will reframe the plight of the post-industrial American town as a situation ripe with the potential for exploring new modes of urban life. The Sign Project will be a platform from which we will catalyze momentous change.

Size Requirement: 2' x 4' or larger
Materials: All materials are acceptable as long as they are weather durable
Deadline: Please have signs completed by April 1st if you would like to be included in the project opening
